A theme from the new documentary, "National Anthem Girl", is "Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." Likewise, the subject of the film, Janine Stange, is using her story to help educate homeschooled kids while classrooms are closed.
Janine Stange, the patriotic New York singer, and the subject of the new documentary, 'National Anthem Girl' (Kelly's Filmworks Studios), is sharing her amazing story with kids of all ages who are currently attending classes in their family kitchens and living rooms due to the recent Coronavirus-mandated school closings nationwide.
In 2014, Stange became the first person in history to perform The Star-Spangled Banner in all 50 states; 'National Anthem Girl' is a state-by-state chronicle of her journey and the characters she encountered along the way. The film is part diary and part travelogue, filled with anecdotes and stories from the road about the people and heroes the song represents.
In response to the current viral crisis, Stange, along with the movie's producers, is encouraging teachers and homeschool parents across the US to view the film as a part of their daily curriculum, fulfilling categories such as character education, civics, social studies, history, and geography. The film is available for viewing on Amazon Prime and via a special link for non-Prime households. To further enhance the learning experience, Stange is inviting students to join her for a live Q&A session (via Zoom) after the screening is over.
The idea was sparked by a Twitter message Stange received from a newly-appointed homeschool mom. The mother wrote,
"My family really enjoyed it (The 'Anthem Girl' documentary)! And we counted it as our social studies, geography, and vocabulary homeschool lesson for the day..."
Stange, who now travels the country as a motivational speaker and is the founder of Medal of Honor Mail Call, felt this free offering for homebound kids was just another way to "do what she could with what she had", a major theme from the movie.
