This year Juneteenth is being celebrated in staggering numbers across the nation. Although more and more people are learning about Juneteenth and honoring this day of remembrance, it is still only just reaching parts of our nation.
For those who aren’t familiar with the not-yet-nationally-recognized holiday, it is a celebration of the true end of slavery. On June 19th, 1865—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued to end slavery—slaves in Texas were finally notified of the proclamation that abolished slavery and immediately started praying, dancing, singing, and feasting. Since then, June 19th has been celebrated as the day of emancipation in Texas, which is currently the only state to recognize it as a paid holiday.
Learning a history never taught in the classrooms and broadening our view of this country and its history is the first step to creating a truly diverse and equitable country. And what better way to celebrate this holiday than to learn from a Diversity Expert and challenge your own world views.
