Whether it is his faith, his family, or his football team, leadership speaker Herman Edwards exudes passion in all areas of his life. That energetic and enthusiastic approach best defines how he approaches his role as in-studio NFL analyst for ESPN.
A successful NFL coach and accomplished professional athlete, Edwards is one of five coaches in league history to take two different teams to the playoffs in his debut seasons with them. His diverse background in pro football allows him to be one of the most informed and educated analysts on television today.
Herm Edwards played pro football from 1977-1986, spending the first nine of those seasons with Philadelphia. He earned second-team All-NFC honors in 1980 and played an instrumental role on a hard-hitting Philadelphia defense that helped boost the Eagles to a berth in Super Bowl XV that season.
Edwards began his coaching career with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1989 as the recipient of the club’s Minority Coaching Fellowship. He is the first graduate of the Minority Coaching Fellowship to become the head coach of the franchise for which he served his fellowship.
He served as the New York Jets head coach from 2001-2006, compiling a 39-41 record. He was on the sideline for five postseason contests with the Jets, the best total of any coach in team annals. He registered 35 victories with the Jets from 2001-2004.
Edwards joined the Chiefs in 2006, and became the first head coach in franchise history to guide the Chiefs to the playoffs in his initial season with the club. In his debut season, Edwards posted a 9-7 record, tying the mark of most victories by a first-year coach in franchise history.
Throughout his career, Herman Edwards has used his position in the league to serve as a positive role model. He and his wife are involved in numerous charitable efforts and philanthropic endeavors in their home base of Kansas City.
Herm Edwards was named “Big Brother of the Year” by the Catholic Big Brothers for Boys and Girls in New York. He has also participated in the All Pro Dad initiative, a parenting program that has received national recognition, as well as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Boys & Girls Clubs.
In 1985, he founded the Herm Edwards Youth Foundation, and in May 2011, he brought The Herm Edwards Youth Football Camp to Kansas City, where 1,100 youngsters participated in a two-day event at the Chiefs practice facility. The foundation also hosted the Herm Edwards Charity Golf Classic for 11 years, raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club in Seaside, California.
