Elizabeth Cobbs Speaker Biography
Elizabeth Cobbs, Ph.D., is a historian who has won national prizes for non-fiction, fiction, and filmmaking. A graduate of Stanford and author of nine books, she has served on the jury for the Pulitzer Prize in History and Historical Advisory Committee of the U.S. State Department, and writes for the New York Times, Washington Post, and Financial Times of London. Cobbs is Emerita Professor at San Diego State University and recently retired as the Glasscock Chair at Texas A&M. In 2020, the U.S. Army Signal Corps Association named her Brevet Colonel for unearthing the story of America’s first women soldiers. At 23, Cobbs won the Rockefeller Youth Award for making “a significant contribution to the well-being of mankind.” Her most recent book, published by Harvard, is Fearless Women: Feminist Patriots from Abigail Adams to Beyoncé.

Three years of war had brought Europe to its knees. German submarines roamed the Atlantic, sinking U.S. merchant ships. America entered the First World War in 1917, but when General John Pershing reached Paris, he struggled to issue even simple commands. Ill-prepared men could not connect phone calls swiftly and accurately on the technology of the day. Pershing requested 100 uniformed women for urgent service in France. Would they answer the call?
