Andres Oppenheimer Speaker Biography

Andres Oppenheimer is a CNN political analyst and syndicated columnist for The Miami Herald. He is an internationally known authority on Latin American affairs, economic development, and the region’s history and relationships particularly with the U.S. Oppenheimer analyzes the latest political developments and interviews top government and business leaders on his weekly show Oppenheimer Presenta, which airs in 20 countries on CNN en Español.

His column The Oppenheimer Report appears twice a week in The Miami Herald. He was part of the newspaper’s team that broke the Iran-Contra scandal in 1987, resulting in a Pulitzer Prize. Oppenheimer’s in depth reporting on Latin America has earned him several international accolades including the King of Spain Award, the Overseas Press Award, and a place on Poder Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Powerful People in Latin America” in 2002 and 2008.

Oppenheimer is the author of Saving the Americas: The Dangerous Decline of Latin America and What The U.S. Must Do. He has written extensively on Fidel Castro and Cuba; in fact, his first book, Castro’s Final Hour was praised as “the definitive book on Cuba in the past decade.” His books have topped best-seller lists in both the United States and Latin American countries. Much of his recent investigative reporting focuses on Latin America’s lagging pace of development in comparison to other regions of the world, and what countries can do to up their game.

Oppenheimer was born and raised in Argentina and immigrated to the U.S. in 1976 for his graduate studies.
