Guiding Principles for Patient Experience Excellence
Shares eight guiding principles, reflects on why they are critical components of successful patient experience efforts and offers examples of each principle in action. These principles offer strategic actions and tangible points of focus organizations can apply to drive efforts forward: Identify and support accountable leadership with committed time and focused intent to shape and guide experience strategy Establish and reinforce a strong, vibrant and positive organizational culture and all it comprises Develop a formal definition for what experience is to their organization Implement a defined process for continuous patient and family input and engagement Engage all voices in driving comprehensive, systemic and lasting solutions Look beyond clinical experience of care to all interactions and touch points Focus on alignment across all segments of the continuum and the spaces in between Encompass both a focus on healing and a commitment to well-being Exploring the actions of successful organizations and the lessons learned from those striving for excellence, this paper represents foundational building blocks to organization effectiveness and a means to achieving sustained outcomes.

Caring for our Children: A Look at Patient Experience in a Pediatric Setting
Examines evidence of successful patient experience practices in pediatric settings and highlights key findings to help organizations achieve their experience goals. The paper is grounded in a two-part research project consisting of eight focus group interviews with members of the Institute’s Pediatric Council as well as a survey of 142 pediatric organizations. In the absence of a mandated pediatric HCAHPS survey in the United States, the study sought to gather key measures in pediatric organizations as a means to benchmark and share improvement efforts that would enhance patient experience across the pediatric community.

The Power of Person-Centeredness in Long-Term Care: A View Across the Continuum
In an effort to expand the overall discussion on experience, this paper explores the perspectives and practices of the patient, resident and family experience in long-term care. It examines that while there are clear and distinct differences at the various points in the care continuum, there is also a much stronger connection than we might consider as we look at the efforts and concepts driving person-centeredness and the patient, resident and family experience. Through engaging with the voices of practice from six leading organizations committed to excellence in long-term care – Beatitudes Campus (AZ), Breckenridge Village (OH), Carolinas HealthCare System (NC), Commonwealth Care of Roanoke (VA), Jewish Home Lifecare (NY), and Vetter Health Services (NE) – the paper looks to identify key motivations and practices, support and roadblocks and the impact a focus on experience has in the long-term care setting overall. By taking a cross continuum perspective, grounded in the voices of real experiences in long-term care, the paper provides not only insights but also inspiration for actions that can have a positive and lasting effect on those receiving care in all segments of the care continuum.
