Where is the economy going in 2019 and how are the best companies and leaders navigating what comes next? Those are the themes Geoff Colvin can address through his presentations. And even the big disruptor, Amazon, is mindful of how perilous this business environment can be. Last week, CEO Jeff Bezos said at an all-hands meeting in Seattle, per CNBC “Amazon is not too big to fail. … In fact, I predict one day Amazon will fail. Amazon will go bankrupt. If you look at large companies, their lifespans tend to be 30-plus years, not a hundred-plus years.” He went on, “If we start to focus on ourselves, instead of focusing on our customers, that will be the beginning of the end. … We have to try and delay that day for as long as possible.”
Very wise words – and it sums up the unease every leader has in the pit of their stomachs as they navigate the uncertain business environment. Geoff’s best advice to everyone – “Confront reality – and sooner than later! Those leaders and businesses who do so are generally the ones who win biggest. After all, someone has to win – and it may as well be you.”
Here, Geoff Colvin pieced together his thoughts on the business climate for 2019 – an economy where trade, taxes, and spending will factor big in the decisions leaders make on how to stay competitive.
