Daron K Roberts Speaker Biography

Daron K. Roberts is a former NFL coach and author of, “Call an Audible” (Greenleaf 2017). “Call an Audible” was named a #1 New Release and Best Seller by Amazon, and Sports Illustrated selected the book as one of its “Best Sports Business Books of 2017.”

Currently, Roberts serves as founding director of the Center for Sports Leadership and Innovation (CSLi) at the University of Texas. He created CSLi in the fall of 2014. The Center is the first university-based institute dedicated to developing leadership and character curricula for high school, collegiate and professional athletes. Through the Center, Roberts teaches a course – A Gameplan for Winning at Life– to incoming freshmen student-athletes. In January of 2018, the Center received the commitment and financial support of NBA All-Star, Kevin Durant.

Roberts holds a faculty appointment in the Liberal Arts Honors Program. He has received the Silver Spurs Centennial Teaching Award, Creative Engagement Award and was named a distinguished faculty member by the School of Undergraduate Studies in 2015. His research revolves around issues of rejection, failure management and leadership.

After graduating from Harvard Law School (2007), Roberts served coaching stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers and Cleveland Browns. He holds a B.A. in Plan II Honors and Government from the University of Texas (2001) and an M.P.P. from Harvard’s Kennedy School (2004).

In 2010, Daron launched a nonprofit football camp – 4th and 1, Inc. 4th and 1 provides free SAT prep, life skills development and football training to at-risk youth in Michigan, Texas and Florida. The camp has served nearly 500 student-athletes since 2010.

The Presidential Leadership Foundation – a joint venture between Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – tabbed Roberts as a Presidential Leadership Scholar for 2015. He was one of 60 members in the inaugural class.

Roberts has been featured in ESPN the Magazine, Bloomberg Businessweek and Sports Illustrated. His articles have appeared in The Dallas Morning News, Fortune, Houston Chronicle, and Time.

Roberts is the host of an industry-leading podcast – A Tribe Called Yes (available on iTunes and Stitcher).

In the summer of 2006, author Daron K. Roberts was just one year away from earning a law degree from his dream school: Harvard. But that summer, in the throes of a clerkship at a Texas law firm, Roberts had a revelation—he wanted something different. Very different. Daron Roberts wanted to be an NFL football coach.

After making the transition from Harvard Law student to NFL newbie, Roberts worked as a coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers, and the Cleveland Browns. But he’s not forgotten how hard it was to take that first step in a new direction.

In this talk, Roberts shares his inspiring journey and reveals his playbook to help guide your next transition.

[Corporate/Association or College/University]

Are you placing too much importance on the advice of others? This talk will teach you how to subdue the white noise of outside forces and create a unique “soundtrack” for your life.

  • Identify the unique skillset that gives you a competitive advantage over your competition
  • Draft the personal narrative that embodies your ability to overcome adversity
  • Deflate your dreams and convert that energy into action

In this energizing talk, Daron charts one of the most difficult decisions he has made in life – stepping away from the world of coaching. His decision  to spend more time with his kids and pursue a life of teaching will inspire you to say YES to that risky move in your life.

  • Take a “personal inventory” of what matters most to you
  • Create a list of “non-negotiables” to keep you grounded in your purpose
  • Harness the courage to say “YES” to that gamble you’ve been thinking about for way too long

[Corporate/Association or College/University]

This talk walks listeners through a step-by-step process to implement daily accountability practices. Most people drift through life with an abundance of aspirations and very little action. This high energy speech is what your organization needs in order to start achieving its goals.

  • Examine the best daily practices that create a system for personal accountability and goal achievement
  • Create a personal inspiration curriculum for staying motivated to make sustained personal growth
  • Marshal the power of social media to stay in the “achievement zone”

[Corporate/Association or College/University]

Want to get your dream job? Step 1: Wake Up. This session will walk you through the steps to identify your purpose in life and chart a path to get there. Whether you’re a disillusioned sophomore or disgruntled attorney, this session will equip you with an arsenal of action steps that will help to guide you in the right direction.

  • Craft a scouting report on the job that you want
  • Target decision-makers who can help you break into your desired industry
  • Leverage an internship or volunteer gig into a full-time position

[College/University or Educators]

How can we leverage personal and professional setbacks to create value? In this session, you will identify the reasons why your progress is sitting in “timeout.” Instead of punting away your critical decisions, listen to this talk and gain the confidence you need to double-down on your next career move

  • Confront the impediments that are preventing you from taking the next step in your professional life
  • Rely on yourself for encouragement instead of seeking the approval of others
  • Control your life’s narrative and reframe how others view your professional value
