Dhaval Desai Speaker Biography
Dr. Dhaval Desai is a dual board-certified Internal Medicine and Pediatrics physician, healthcare leader, author, podcast host, and national speaker whose work centers on the human side of medicine. Drawing on more than a decade of frontline clinical care and healthcare leadership, Dr. Desai speaks candidly about physician burnout and ment al health, psychological safety, humanism in medicine, leadership through crisis, and creating a more sustainable culture for the people who care for others.
Dr. Desai spent more than a decade at Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, including ten years as Director of Hospital Medicine, where he led physicians and multidisciplinary teams through some of healthcare’s most challenging moments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped lead frontline crisis management involving staffing, clinical protocols, telehealth, PPE preservation, and rapidly changing operational demands. That experience profoundly shaped his work around healthcare worker well-being, vulnerability, psychological safety, and the need to rethink how healthcare organizations support their people. He also served in physician leadership roles focused on wellness, peer support, patient experience, safety, quality, and physician intervention.
Today, Dr. Desai is co-owner and physician at The Atlanta Internists, where he practices direct primary care with an emphasis on accessibility, prevention, meaningful physicianpatient relationships, and restoring time and connection to medicine. His career has given him a unique perspective spanning large healthcare systems, frontline hospital medicine, leadership, pediatrics, community health, and independent medical practice.
Dr. Desai is the author of Burning Out on the COVID Front Lines: A Doctor’s Memoir of Fatherhood, Race & Perseverance in the Pandemic. The memoir chronicles his experience practicing and leading through COVID-19 while navigating the personal realities of being a husband, father, and physician during an extraordinary period in medicine.
A seasoned speaker and educator, Dr. Desai has presented nationally and regionally on physician burnout, psychological safety, compassionate care, patient experience, healthcare leadership, and multidisciplinary collaboration. His approach blends evidence and leadership experience with personal storytelling, vulnerability, and practical lessons audiences can carry back to their organizations and communities.
Dr. Desai is also the creator and host of Seen in Full, a podcast exploring the stories healthcare professionals and others carry but rarely say out loud. His writing and commentary have appeared in outlets including TIME, CNN, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Psychology Today, and other national publications, and he is a frequent medical contributor across television, radio, and digital media.
His media experience includes appearances and contributions to CNN, NBC, NPR/WABE, Telemundo, Univision, and Atlanta television outlets.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Desai is deeply engaged in community and school-based advocacy, including work focused on youth safety, mental health, education, and strengthening the relationship between families, schools, and their communities. A graduate of Emory University and the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, he completed his combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency at Wright State University.
Whether speaking to physicians, healthcare executives, educators, students, or community audiences, Dr. Desai brings a consistent message: the systems we build matter, but the people within them matter more. His work challenges audiences to think differently about burnout, leadership, resilience, connection, and what it means to preserve our humanity while caring for others.
