Lisa DeLong, RN Speaker Biography

Known as the “Joyful Shaman,” Lisa bridges the gap between tragedy and triumph in a surprisingly joyful way! She has more than forty years of experience in healthcare and life transformation. She believes whole heartedly that attending to the inner spirit opens us up to our authentic nature and brings us joy personally and professionally.

“Miracles manifest through people—people like you!”

Lifetime Experience

Lisa’s first-born son, Justin, passed at the age of fifteen in 2000 after a ten-year remission from leukemia. Shockingly, six years later, her youngest son, Jacob, was diagnosed with the same kind of leukemia. He has completed treatments and is now a healthy adult! As one would imagine, these were challenging times much like we are experiencing now during this global pandemic. Through decades of her sons’ cancer treatments, Lisa lived the experience of being quarantined, wearing masks, and fearing being infected by others. Her message is filled with first-hand insights on how to thrive, even in the midst of crisis and devastating loss.

Lisa defines a miracle as a change in perception which leads to wonder and awe. As an international speaker, author, bereavement facilitator, ballroom dancer and mom, she weaves together insights from ancient wisdom and modern thought to inspire audiences with a powerful head to heart message using storytelling, writing prompts, dance, and humor. Audiences are transformed as they recognize the valuable gems hidden within their life experiences and remember who they truly are.

Her memoir, BLOOD Brothers, is a heart expanding must read especially in times like these. It is a true ally for anyone experiencing loss. It is required reading for nursing students interested in learning how to improve their connection with patients through understanding the patient experience.

Lisa experiences miracles often! She lives a joyful life in Southern California and Oregon with her husband of 37 years. Her two adult daughters, son and childhood dog, Poochini, are alive and well. Her family remains close and surprisingly sane!

WOW…is all I could really say after Lisa’s talk.
Honestly I thought, is she really going to speak to us for an hour and a half ? What is she going to make us do? But you honestly were the BEST hour and half speaker I’ve ever heard. The time flew by so quickly, and as your story came to an end, I was hoping time would slow down and that you wouldn’t stop talking. I applaud you for your strength and courage to continue to help others and share your amazing story!

What impacted me was when she said that we can manifest miracles through what we do when we help people, our clients. This touched me because every day we come across people desperate for help just so they can work and looking for any light at the end of the tunnel and sometimes we can feel like it’s just another call we take or another case we process but her message reminded me to ‘Keep Going” as she said also. It makes me feel so good inside that we are part of this agency that is here for people and we can manifest miracles and I just want to remember that every day. It brought tears to my eyes that she thanked all of us and I really felt valued.

Lisa is an awesome story teller and I appreciated how she related her experiences to the work staff perform every day. I’ve listened to a couple of her Ted Talks too.

Ann Guerrero, Supervisor, CCNE

I thought her presentation was a life changing testimony for many and certainly a very concise message to persons who serve the community. A message of hope and inspiration and mostly a message of goodwill to those we serve.
Thank Lisa for her time and a life time of well wishes for Lisa and her family.

Everyone in healthcare should hear Lisa’s inspiring story and read her book. She touched our hearts and our funny bone with inspiration, personal stories, and her genuine concern for our well-being. Thank you, Lisa, for sharing your story and teaching all of us.”.

Today’s Leadership Workshop was one of the BEST ever. Lisa DeLong’s story is perfect for health care workers to hear. If she doesn’t make you re-commit to the vision, nothing will. (The tissues were flying at my table). What a great day! What a Phenomenal day!!!”.

Jim, CEO

Thank you so much for connecting Palmetto Health with Lisa DeLong as our guest inspirer at Tuesday’s Leadership Institute Workshop. Lisa exceeded my expectations! Leaders are still completing our feedback survey, but with 400 leaders already completing the survey she has a 90% “strongly agree” response rate, which is fantastic and higher than any other speaker that day. Many leaders commented that she was the best part of the day, reconnected them to why they got into healthcare and one even said it was one of the top three inspirational speakers she has heard in her 45 years at Palmetto Health.
I will share the feedback with her when our survey closes but wanted to share this with you. I especially appreciate her joining us for the entire day Tuesday. I think this made a huge impact and allowed her to connect more with the audience. Her referencing Mr. Beaman’s comments and others made it seem like she was a part of the team.”.

Review for Blood Brothers-
“Oh, be still my aching heart. Mom and nurse Lisa Solis DeLong lives through an unimaginable ordeal: not one, but two little boys with leukemia. Bless her for her searing honesty. This is not a Hallmark card or a Lifetime special. A real mom and dad and sisters and brothers live through the pain, warts and all, and Lisa has the guts to reveal life as it really was. And yet magical moments shine through: prayers, and faith, and small miracles, and dreams of release. Definitely recommended reading for anyone dealing with family loss or cancer, but also, an eye-opening account for those, like me, who have not experienced children with potentially terminal illnesses. Blood Brothers is a beautiful contribution to our understanding of childhood illness and the power of a mother’s love.”.
