The Other End of The Stethoscope
The Other End of the Stethoscope reminds healthcare professionals of the vital role they play in the healing process of patients. This keynote details the experience of a young patient during hospitalization, the care and compassion shown by healthcare professionals, and the importance of healthcare professionals being safe, secure, and appreciated in their role within this sacred field.

Participants will also come away with an understanding of each patient and co-worker’s individuality, unique differences, and appreciation for the role every healthcare employee plays in the healing of patients and their families. The patient and family experience is absolutely vital in quality, competent health care.

Learning Objectives
- Convey the foundation of compassionate care: human presence
- Demonstrate an understanding of individual patient and family needs in a clinical setting

Narrative Nursing
The Narrative Nursing workshop teaches nurses to embrace their stories and practice simple writing techniques to guard against compassion fatigue and burnout. By leading nurses into the practice of therapeutic journaling, nurses are able to find different perspectives to invoke compassion and empathy — for patients, for themselves, doctors, fellow nurses and the families of patients.

This workshop is a creative and safe space that offers compelling reasons for learning to value one’s stories, utilize writing as a therapeutic resource and gain perspective about others in the healthcare community.

Learning Objectives
- Learning to value one’s stories
- Utilizing writing as a therapeutic resource
- Gaining perspective about co-workers and staff

Presence: Cornerstone of Caregiving
Borrowing from experience, academics, world religion and ancient practices, Presence teaches healthcare professionals easy-to-implement techniques of mindfulness, meditation and being an open witness for patients and families.

Practicing mindfulness has been shown to increase empathy for patients, family and self, reduce errors and infection, and create a more cohesive working environment. Whether through therapeutic journaling, formal meditation practice or mindful hand washing techniques, this keynote helps individuals create a more compassionate environment. . . starting with compassion for and within oneself.

Learning Objectives
- Blend elements from different disciplines to achieve an understanding of how caregivers can improve patient experiences
- Better understand the experience of being a patient or family member
- Learn effective and innovative best practices from leading healthcare facilities
