6 Tips for Goal Setting in the New Year

New year, new me right? We’ve all said this little phrase on the eve of the new year with every intention of accomplishing our new year's resolutions. Unfortunately, it can be so overwhelming just to get started that we often give up and run back to the safety of our comfort zone.

If you feel yourself losing sight of your goals and making excuses, remind yourself that improvement is a marathon, not a sprint. In order for new habits to stick, they have to be realistic and sustainable. Whether it be running your first half marathon, getting that promotion, or practicing positive self-talk, don’t let the stress of life stand in the way of your transformation in 2023. Instead, use these tips and tricks — inspired by ideas from our top motivational keynote speakers — to ensure your success with even your most audacious goals in the new year.

Have a plan

Start by asking yourself these fundamental questions. How do you measure the success of your resolution? How will you feel once you accomplish this goal? If your goal is to “cut out sugar” or “form closer relationships with friends and family,” what steps do you have to take to ease yourself into this new lifestyle?

Sam Silverstein guides companies and individuals through his system centered around accountability. If you focus on things that are within your control, rather than focusing on what is out of your control, you will see quantifiable progress. Use that momentum to face your goals with confidence.

It’s all about perspective

When our dreams take shape in our minds, we often view them as just that, unattainable dreams. It’s easy to doubt yourself when your ambitions are lofty and you’ve labeled your goals with a name that refers to something we can only experience from afar. If your goals are really meaningful to you, Ben Nemtin suggests demystifying intimidating tasks by turning ‘dreams’ into ‘projects.’

Life is full of endless possibilities so practice strengthening your mindfulness and gratitude. Try stepping out of your bubble to help someone else accomplish their tasks and projects to find fresh inspiration.

Expect the unexpected

Some of the strongest materials on Earth are flexible! You can bend, but you don’t have to break. Instead, master the art of going with the flow and making the most of any situation, even if you find yourself face-to-face with a setback that is unexpectedly derailing your goals.

Your capacity for discomfort can be built up and strengthened to the point that you barely bat an eye at the discomfort that used to scare you. Sterling Hawkins encourages you to seek discomfort and vulnerability; this will propel your success and create a more well-rounded version of yourself.

Imperfection is part of progress

One setback does not define your future and your capabilities. Matt Mayberry advises that you have the power to change whatever it is that you are struggling with now. Instead of applying pressure to be the idyllic version of success, give yourself the same grace you would give others. It’s ok to take a break to recharge, make a mistake, or even change your goals as you grow as a person.

Positive mental reinforcement will be the difference between missing one day and giving up on your goals altogether. Celebrate even the smallest of wins because it is not your job to be perfect.

Resilience is a choice

After these last few years, people all over the world have encountered tremendous barriers. In 2023, folks will have to dig deep and choose to prioritize their goals. It can be difficult to be kicked down, but there is always the potential for opportunity. Although you may have to pivot in a direction you originally did not select or foresee, lean on your support system and trust in yourself to never give up.

Chaunte Lowe influences audiences to shift their mindsets from “I can’t” to “why not me and why not today?” It’s up to you to learn from your mistakes and use any failures as a tool to help you grow.

It’s never too late

Don’t be hesitant to try something new and add additional goals throughout the year. Everyone starts somewhere and this new activity could be your favorite one yet.

After the tragic passing of a close friend, Sebastian Terry began transforming his life one bucket list action at a time. Terry’s perspective shifted to “why should I wait to do the things that will make me happy?”
